An equation is like a balanced scale. Undo the final operation first and apply the same change to both sides.

Worked example

Solve 4x + 7 = 31.

  1. Undo +7: 4x = 24.
  2. Undo ×4: x = 6.
  3. Check: 4 × 6 + 7 = 31.
