The key idea

Understand the rule first

A ratio tells you the relative number of equal parts. Add the parts for a total share, find the value of one part, then scale each group.

Worked example

Share 48 counters in the ratio 3:5.

  1. There are 3 + 5 = 8 equal parts.
  2. One part is 48 ÷ 8 = 6.
  3. The shares are 3 × 6 = 18 and 5 × 6 = 30.
