The key idea

Understand the rule first

The denominator names the size of each part. Use equivalent fractions when denominators differ, and divide by the denominator before multiplying by the numerator when finding a fraction of a quantity.

Worked example

Calculate 3/4 + 1/8.

  1. Use eighths: 3/4 = 6/8.
  2. Add the numerators: 6/8 + 1/8 = 7/8.
  3. Seven eighths cannot be simplified.
