The key idea

Understand the rule first

Identify the scale and units before using the data. Mean is total ÷ number of values; range is largest − smallest.

Worked example

Find the mean and range of 6, 8, 8, 13, 15.

  1. Total: 6 + 8 + 8 + 13 + 15 = 50.
  2. Mean: 50 ÷ 5 = 10.
  3. Range: 15 − 6 = 9.
